On Thursday, October 26, KPHO news anchor Christina Wofford will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies for the Desert Cancer Foundation of Arizona’s ninth annual “Learning, Loving and Living with Cancer” awards luncheon, to be held at Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort in Chandler. DCFA’s Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Edgar Hernandez will share his knowledge about cancer and current trends in the treatment of various kinds of cancers. An individual or organization will also receive the coveted Linda Rainford Award for contributions to the field of cancer education, prevention and/or treatment. “Health Partner” organizations will have booths sharing information and resources available to cancer patients and their families. Personal testimonials and an inspirational speech will round out the event.

Dr. Hernandez came to America from Mexico at the age of 10, speaking no English. He rose from those humble beginnings to become a widely respected surgeon and philanthropist. Hernandez has been Chief of Surgery at Chandler Regional Hospital, Chief of Staff, and a member of the Hospital Board. He has participated in numerous cancer symposiums throughout the country during his years in private practice. In addition to his volunteer work with DCFA, Hernandez takes medical personnel and supplies to Mexico annually, training Mexican medical professionals and treating those less fortunate. He is also Attending Surgeon for Kirksville College of Medicine where he teaches medical students and interns.

Other speakers at the event include Sheila Brooks who is a breast cancer survivor and has been affiliated with the American Cancer Society since 1985. Sheila began her volunteer work with the Reach to Recovery Program for breast cancer patients, and is currently the State Coordinator for the Program. Bob Caccamo, former Chandler High School and El Dorado High School Principal and current Chandler City Councilman will share the perspective of a family member. Caccamo’s wife, Maryanne has been diagnosed with cancer and courageously continues the fight with the disease and its complications.

Kitty Wiemelt, owner of “Winds of Change Consulting” will creatively tell participants how to “Live Your Legacy” in Learning, Loving, Living and Laughing. Wiemelt’s role as a healthcare specialist gives her numerous opportunities to apply her experience as an educator, coach and healthcare administrator. She is an author, avid fly fisherman, and graduate of Barnum and Bailey Clown School.

The event is being underwritten by generous donors Dr. Edgar Hernandez and Wells Fargo Bank – Karen Howe, Manager of the Ray/Chandler Boulevard branch. Hernandez is a partner with DCFA, treating women diagnosed through DCFA-sponsored mammograms. He also sits on the DCFA Advisory Board.
