Linda Rainford Award – 2012 Recipient

Dr. Ajay Bhatnagar Receives Prestigious Humanitarian Award

Casa Grande, AZ – Dr. Ajay Bhatnagar, Radiation Oncologist for Cancer Treatment Services Arizona (CTSA), received The Desert Cancer Foundation of Arizona’s Edgar H. Hernandez Humanitarian Award at the annual “Learning, Loving, and Living with Cancer” Luncheon on October 25, 2012.

Dr. Bhatnagar received this honor in recognition of his impact in the field of Cancer Education, Prevention, Treatment, and Support Services. Dr. Bhatnagar has donated his time and service in support of the Desert Cancer Foundation of Arizona (DCFA) on many occasions. He helped create the first Prostate Cancer Screening program for the DCFA and continues to participate actively, helping ease the nerves and concerns of each patient. He serves on the Casa Grande Regional Medical Center (CGRMC) Hospital Foundation Board and is a member of the DCFA Medical Advisory Board. Dr. Bhatnagar is also a member of the Casa Grande Rotary Club, where he is actively involved in serving the local community through various projects, including scholarships for high school students. He has volunteered countless hours of his time to giving lectures to the community, including participating in CGRMC’s Lunch and Learn program.

Not only did Dr. Bhatnagar receive this honor during “Learning, Loving, and Living with Cancer” luncheon, he also shared a presentation on Electronic Brachytherapy, an innovative method for treating skin cancer for which he is regarded as a national authority. Though he treats a broad range of cancers with cutting-edge radiation therapy technology, Dr. Bhatnagar has focused very closely on utilizing this new, non-invasive treatment for skin cancer that has proven to be more effective and show better patient outcomes than conventional treatment options. Dr. Bhatnagar has successfully treated countless patients living with skin cancer, has pioneered clinical research studies, and worked tirelessly to spread awareness of the disease in Arizona, which has one of the highest incidence rates of skin cancer in the world. Said Dr. Bhatnagar, “At CTSA, our goal has always been to bring university-level cancer care and support services to the people in the communities we serve. We see the Desert Cancer Foundation as one of our allies in the fight against cancer in Maricopa and Pinal counties, and I’m honored to be acknowledged by such a noble organization.”

The mission of the Desert Cancer Foundation of Arizona is “to provide cancer education and treatment resources to the uninsured of Arizona.” For information about volunteering or donating to the DCFA, please go to the web site, www.desertcanceraz.org.
